About the instructors

Fran Paulman

Fiber and crafts have always been a part of Fran Paulman's life, including knitting, sewing, crochet, embroidery, cross stitch, quilting and beading - even knitting with beads. Her greatest love, however, is teaching...teaching crafts, of course. What she knows, she wants to share with others who enjoy working with fiber and in color. What she doesn't know, she seeks to learn from other teachers and from her students, who have taught her many things in many ways.

Lindsey Ross

Lindsey has been knitting voraciously for seven years and is rarely seen without a pair of needles in tow. As the former President of the Urban Craft Uprising, her crafty background expands beyond the realm of fiber arts. An "experimental knitter," she never even gave a nod towards a pattern until three years in. While still preferring to go her own direction on most projects, has quite an expansive realm of technical knowledge on the subject, as she spends much of her free time at Yarnia plowing (and knitting) through the library of knitting books that have accumulated.

Knitting Surgery
Do you have a half-finished scarf that's been hiding in the back of your closet for six months because you've dropped a stitch and don't know how to rescue it? Or perhaps you're hesitant to take that leap to a more complicated project because you're afraid of your stitches falling off the needle and all the hard work you've already put in unraveling before your very eyes.

In this class we'll go over the basic anatomy of a stitch, learning how to recognize the different elements and shapes that turn a bunch of loops into a beautiful knitted fabric. This will also help in figuring out whether you should be knitting or purling a given stitch, and whether you've put that dropped stitch back onto the needle backwards.

Most importantly, we'll learn how to "un-knit" and backtrack to a problem spot, and fix the most common mistakes such as dropped stitches, split stitches, and a nasty run of unraveling knitting. Bring in your problem projects and we'll get you back up and running!

Date: Tuesday, May 27th
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Cables
The simple addition of cables can add elegance, complexity, and intrigue to any project--or can just keep you from going crazy if you're knitting 75 rows of straight stockinette! In this class we'll learn the basics of cabling--including their properties, how they're made, and some helpful tips about when they're the perfect addition to spice up that project you're making…and when they aren't.

We'll learn how to read cable charts and understand patterns that include cable directions; what yarn will type of yarn cables are most compatible with; and in the end you'll come away with a handful of cool cable ideas and patterns to practice with!

Date: Wednesday, June 4
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Circular and Double-Pointed Needles
Are you ready to move beyond straight needles and discover the joys of "circs" and "DPN"s? Learning these two techniques will open up a world of new projects to you, including socks, gloves, skirts, leg warmers…

In this class we'll be working off of a hat pattern that uses both of these techniques (double pointed needles at the crown, when there are fewer stitches, and then circulars later on as the hat grows), so you'll go home with two new skills, and a project underway!

Date: Tuesday, June 10
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Cost: $25.00 plus materials

Pattern Reading
So you've mastered the ability to make squares and rectangles, but want to take your knitting to the next level. As complex as knitted garments may look, they are comprised of surprisingly few elements. The trick is knowing how to combine them, and when--this is why we have patterns! Essentially, someone's already done the dirty work for us, and all we have to do is follow their directions. But simple as it may sound, trying to follow a knitting pattern without learning the language will probably make you want to never knit anything besides chunky scarves with eyelash yarn.

In this class we'll deconstruct a typical knitting pattern, learning the terminology, rhythm, and symbols that turn these boggling directions into the key to a beautiful finished product! You'll get hands-on practice with reading sample patterns and understanding them yourself, by knitting swatches that reflect the directions given in the pattern.

Date: Tuesday, June 24
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Cost: $25.00 plus materials

Crocheted Socks
There is nothing like a pair of hand-made socks. But wait - you don't knit!!!! Crocheters want to make socks too! Why should we be left out of the fun?

This class will be taught in two parts--the first explaining the basic technique and components of sock-making. We'll start at the cuff of the sock and together we'll start to crochet a decorative design in a continuous round. Then you'll have two weeks to crochet at your own pace until you make it to the heel. In the second class you'll learn how to turn the heel - a little differently than in knitting - and in less time than your knitty friends, you'll also be holding something that looks like a sock! Crocheters like warm feet too!

Date: Tuesday, July 15 AND July 29
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Cost: $40.00 plus materials
